Chip Spies, President

Chip is the Founder and President of the Free The Andro (FTA) coalition. His primary interest is simply “How to restore migratory fish runs on the Androscoggin River, starting at head-of-tide.” He believes the work of Free The Andro is a critical first step.

Tom Walek, Vice President

Tom is a resident of Brunswick and lifelong communications professional. He began his career as a journalist covering global financial markets before building two public relations agencies serving clients in North America, Europe, and Asia. Throughout his career, Tom has devoted time and energy to pro bono conservation clients. 

Chuck Verrill, Secretary

Chuck is the President of Maine Rivers and serves on the International Law Institute's board. After a career practicing law in Washington D.C. and teaching at Georgetown and Duke Universities, Chuck has acted as pro bono counsel on river restoration cases involving the Penobscot, Kennebec, Sebasticook, and St. Croix Rivers.

Jeff Bush, Treasurer

Jeff serves on the board and conservation committee of the Merrymeeting Bay Chapter of Trout Unlimited, and as the chair of the Maine Council of Trout Unlimited. In his free time, he enjoys fishing for Maine's native brook trout and landlocked salmon.  

Vlad Douhovnikoff

Dr. Douhovnikoff, an Associate Professor of Biology at Bowdoin College, is an ecologist with a history of research on the impact of dams on downstream ecosystems. His River Ecology course focuses on the natural resource management and ecology of the Androscoggin River from its headwaters to Merrymeeting Bay.

Ray Minchak

Ray serves as the President of the Merrymeeting Bay Chapter of Trout Unlimited. He has been engaged in environmental protection and clean water advocacy since he began working for Hudson River Sloop CLEARWATER in 1980.

Andy Fisk

Andy is the Northeast Regional Director for American Rivers. He has worked in conservation for over 25 years in the Maine state government and as Executive Director of the Connecticut River Conservancy. He enjoys working on environmental problems with local communities so that everyone can be sustained by nature.

Ed Friedman

Friends of Merrymeeting Bay works through research, advocacy, education & land conservation to protect and improve the Bay and Gulf of Maine. Ed has chaired the organization since 1996, has a broad environmental science background and has worked from Antarctica to the arctic in fields as diverse as glaciology to wildlife biology.

Richard Estabrook, Clerk

Richard, a Brunswick resident since 1985, is a registered Maine attorney since 1978. He has worked for the State of Maine in various capacities for 35 years.
