Our priorities

The Androscoggin River is a rich natural resource for all the species and towns who depend on its 178 miles. From its headwaters in New Hampshire to Merrymeeting Bay, the Androscoggin has the potential to support bountiful fish populations, which would improve the health of associated ecosystems, boost coastal commercial fisheries that feed on migratory fish, and allow for lobster bait harvesting. We can achieve these ecological benefits alongside recreational and economic opportunities, as well as energy production.

However, for more than 50 years, the Lower Androscoggin River has been managed to prioritize a single goal. Hydropower producers were given run of the river, to the exclusion of all other interests. FTA believes we must rethink the balance of the Androscoggin’s management to diversify ecological, recreational, economic, and energy benefits for its communities.
